One of the jewels of the Orchard Lake Schools is the St. Mary's Athletic
Complex (SMAC), a $4 million ice arena and banquet center. The NHL-
size rink is home to the St. Mary's Prep Eaglets, three-time State
Champions. The state-of-the-art SMAC opened in August 2003. The
complex had a formal dedication in front of 1,700 spectators on hand for the now annual St. Mary’s Alumni hockey team vs. the Red Wing Alumni
game (annual tradition commenced November 18, 2003). The SMAC is a 42,000 sq. ft. complex that provides training facilities for all St. Mary’s
sports programs headed up by the Director of Athletics, George Porritt.
The facility includes:
- NHL regulation ice arena
- Two full-service concession stands
- Full-service weight room
- Four regulation locker rooms
- Two custom locker rooms
- 1,500-spectator seating
- Running track
- Full-service sports shop
- 300-person banquet center, plus a full-service kitchen
The complex hosts several dry floor events that include:
- Founder’s Day
- St. Mary’s Preparatory Auction
It is also home to all in-house seminarian, prep athletic and Board of
Regents scheduled events.
We are proud of the continued growth of the Orchard Lake Pirates Travel Hockey program. The club was established back in January 2003 to help offset the cost of the arena. The club has become the main tenant of the SMAC resulting in approximately $400,000 of revenue. The Pirates organization is becoming one of the top in the state and continues to provide an environment for youth ice hockey players from all over the Detroit metropolitan area. The Pirates and SMAC have hosted numerous tournaments and state-wide player and coaching clinics. While the Pirates organization has established itself as one of the premier clubs in the midwest, many consider the SMAC as one of the premier sports facilities in the same region.
